While on a visit to the Breedlove factory in Bend, Oregon, our staff had the opportunity to hand select woods and other specifications for some custom built Breedlove guitars. This gorgeous Concerto body acoustic guitar with a Masterclass grade Sitka Spruce top and highly figured Myrtlewood back and sides is the third and final guitar to come from our hand selections. (The other two can be found can be found here and here).
When going into the wood vault at Breedlove to select tonewoods to be used in constructing custom guitars for our store, they knew that they wanted to build a guitar with a Sinker Redwood top and Walnut back and sides. Our owner having a guitar with that tonewood pairing in his personal collection as one of his favorites and knowing that our customers would also appreciate the tone generated from this pairing.
Sinker Redwood and Walnut is generally considered as the optimal tonewood pairng for fingerstyle playing. With the Sinker Redwood offering harmonic and dynamic tones to compliment the textured and earthy tones of the walnut.
Having been submerged underwater for many years, Sinker Redwood has developed a crystalline structure in the wood grain which gives unique characteristics to the wood when it is used in guitar construction. For one, it seems to make the wood even more resonant than standard redwood which really elevates the tone when playing fingerstyle. Often players joke that their guitar plays itself because it is so resonant. Another unique characteristic of Sinker Redwood is the fact that it 'opens up' over time. Now this doesn't mean it will open up like a crack in the wood, but the tone of the wood completely opens up and becomes incredibly harmonic and resonant. Like a shy person, just give it some time and care and it will completely open up and reveal its whole tone to you.
Our staff selected a gorgeous, yet simple, honeycomb neck inlay for this guitar. It is a subtle but unique addition to this guitar that adds to its charm.
The Concert body is perfect for those fingerstyle players because it does not have the same booming bass notes that are found in Dreadnought bodies which allows for a more dynamic sound. Featuring a cutaway for easy access to the upper frets and electronics to allow for plugging in to a sound system this guitar works perfectly for players playing small or large venues alike.
This guitar truly is a fingerstyle player's dream.
